The peak wind gust of 90 mph from W on Mar 8, 1994 was associated with a microburst during a severe thunderstorm. The anemometer stopped recording at 81 mph due to a power failure but the maximum wind gust was estimated to have reached at least 90 mph. During the same severe thunderstorm, an anemometer located about ½ mile E of the Jamaica Beach Weather Observatory recorded an unofficial peak wind gust of 102 mph. Post-storm analysis of structural wind damage in the area was consistent with wind velocities of this magnitude. The highest wind gust recorded at the Jamaica Beach Weather Observatory associated with a tropical cyclone was 79 mph from NW on Sep 24, 2005 during Hurricane Rita. Other peak wind gusts at the Jamaica Beach Weather Observatory from tropical cyclones include: 55 mph from E during Hurricane Claudette (2003)...53 mph from E during Tropical Storm Frances (1998)...51 mph from SE during Tropical Storm Fay (2002)...and 46 mph from SE during Tropical Storm Allison (2001). Prior to the establishment of the Jamaica Beach Weather Observatory in 1990, the maximum winds ever recorded on west Galveston Island in what is now the city of Jamaica Beach were associated with the hurricanes of Sep 8, 1900...Aug 17, 1915...Sep 11, 1961 (Carla) and Aug 18, 1983 (Alicia). In each of these major hurricanes, winds in Jamaica Beach probably exceeded 120 mph in gusts. * Also recorded on earlier date(s). |
